Jannik Sinner Advances to Third Round of US Open with 50th Win of the Year

WORLD number one Jannik Sinner won his 50th match of the year on Friday (30/8) WIB, to reach the third round of the 2024 United States (US) Open.

Sinner defeated American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the last 32 in New York for the fourth straight year.

The Italian also beat his Californian rival two weeks ago in Cincinnati and repeated the feat for his 30th hardcourt win of the year.

Sinner hit 28 winners and broke his opponent’s serve eight times.

“He’s a very tough opponent. We played against each other in Cincinnati. I know what to expect, he knows what to expect,” Sinner said Friday (8/30).

Sinner needed just 1 hour and 39 minutes to beat Michelsen, who is ranked 49th in the world, and earn the match.

“It was a real improvement,” said Sinner, who had to recover from a set and a break down in her first-round win over Mackenzie McDonald.

“I want to be better now in the next few days. Let’s see what I can do in the next round,” said the 23-year-old.

In the third round of the US Open, Sinner will face Australian wild card Christopher O’Connell as he looks to stay on track for a semifinal showdown with Carlos Alcaraz, the 2022 US Open champion who won the French Open and Wimbledon this year. (Ant/Z-1)
