Mike Posner has opened up regarding the meaning of his 2016 hit ‘I Took A Pill In Ibiza’.
In a new interview on the Impaulsive podcast, the singer confided that this track hid a rather dark anecdote.
Despite the success of “Cooler than Me” in 2010, the artist did not find as much success in the following years. It was the late DJ Avicii (real name Tim Bergling) who reached out to him at that time.
“When I was home with an empty calendar, he asked me to work with him on his new album,” Mike said.
The latter then went to Ibiza to watch Avicii work but described the experience as “depressing”.
“People were having fun but I had never felt so alone,” he admitted. “Avicii was giving a concert and I was among the crowd. It was at a time when I was still drinking, today I don’t drink anymore. I was watching him do his show and I thought, ‘Dude, I did something stupid. . It was me before and I wish it was me once more, but it’s not. Imagine the sadness of that moment. I was in the crowd, completely drunk and all alone. I was hoping someone would recognize me to make me feel a little better.”
After that, the artist was offered drugs and remembers being “stayed up all night”.
“I woke up the next day in a horrible state,” he confessed. “So this song is regarding that dark time in my life. The irony is that these guys remixed the song and turned it into a nightclub hit.”
