The daughters of singer Jane Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon, paid tribute to their mother, who died on Sunday at the age of 76.
The daughters of singer Jane Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon, hailed Monday the “fierce battle once morest the disease” led by their mother, who died on Sunday, in a press release.
“Jane Birkin passed away following 16 years of a fierce battle with the disease. Since her stroke in September 2021, her family and the wonderful caregivers have been by her side night and day”, they write.
“For a few days, she had been walking once more, was motivated to reschedule her Olympia and had decided to regain her independence. This first evening alone will have been the last. She had decided it”. they add in this text transmitted by Olivier Gluzman, manager of the artist.
“Always too modest and generous”
76-year-old Jane Birkin was found lifeless late Sunday morning at her Parisian home by her life assistant. From Sheila to Clara Luciani, passing by Benjamin Biolay, Alain Souchon and Françoise Hardy, many voices of French song paid tribute to the singer the day following her death.
“My dearest Jane is gone,” wrote singer Marianne Faithfull on social media, also an English artist who hatched during the “Swinging London” of the 1960s and later settled in Paris.
“Jane Birkin was a beautiful and unique woman,” reacted another pop-rock figure, Iggy Pop, in comments relayed by those around her on Twitter.
But the most moving tribute is perhaps that of Etienne Daho, who wrote a long message to the address of the disappeared, Monday on social networks. “I liked your unique voice, high pitched and so singular, your free, poetic and cheeky writing, your commitments”, he writes.
“Always honest. Always light. Always too modest and generous, attributing your successes to others”, adds the “godfather” of French pop, who had co-composed his album Oh! Sorry you were sleeping… in 2020.
