The late artist Amira Amir (1920 – 1968), was distinguished by a stark beauty similar to the features of Hollywood stars in the forties and fifties. Contrary to what is circulated and mentioned by Wikipedia, she is the daughter of the artist, Aziza Amir.
The great novelist Mostafa Nasr says to correct this information that: Her name is Saadia Abu El-Ela Abdel Rahman – she was born on May 8, 1926 in the suburb of Heliopolis.
The late artist has 13 films in her credit: Under the City Sky, God Is With Us, Reckless, Inferno of Jealousy, Doctor of Wellness, Everyone Sings, The Return of the Invisibility Cap, The Unknown Singer, The World is Fine, Love Story, Friday Night, My Daughter, Hanan.
Regarding the story of her entry into art, Nasr continued, in exclusive statements to Al-Dustour: Her father was a butcher. The supply inspector came to him asking him regarding the price of meat. He found that he was selling for more than the price, so he quarreled with the supply inspector, and he hit him with a cleaver and killed him. They sentenced him to life imprisonment with hard labor, and the butcher’s shop was closed forever. So his eldest daughter, Saadia, looked for work to feed her mother and nine siblings.
She worked as a seamstress for a few pennies, so a friend of hers referred her to the actress, Aziza Amir, who is looking for new actresses for her new movie, My Girl.
Saadia submitted the test, and the director Niazi Mustafa chose her, and Aziza Amir agreed to her, and she chose the name Amira Amir. And the director of publicity for the film was able to convince the audience that Amira Amir was originally the daughter of Aziza Amir. The news spread, and Aziza Amir blessed him – temporarily – on the grounds that it was an advertisement for a movie starring and producing it. Aziza Amir played the role of the mother Nahid, and Amira Amir played the role of her daughter Hoda, and the film was shown in April 1944.
Amira Amir was impressed by this story, so she assured everyone who asked her that she was the daughter of Aziza Amir, until Aziza Amir became angry and screamed and announced that she had not given birth to daughters.
Director Kamal Selim liked Amira Amir, and assigned her two important roles in his films Hanan and Friday Night in 1944, then married her and made her the heroine of his film A Love Story in 1945, and Kamal Selim died suddenly, so his student Mohamed Abdel Gawad completed the film’s direction. He also married Amira Amir, and directed her two films: The World is Good with Ibrahim Hamouda and The Return of the Mask of Confidence with Bishara Wakim.
Amira Amir married Jordanian singer Gharam Shaima in 1947 and gave birth to her daughter, then separated from him in 1949. She traveled to the United States of America, where she met an Armenian immigrant of Egyptian origin and married him.
Her husband’s story aroused her curiosity, to know more details regarding his Egyptian origin, and she began to ask him regarding the details of his previous life, and where he lived in Egypt, to tell her that he was born in the Sharkia Governorate, only to discover that he was raised in the same place where she got married.
Amira Amir asked her husband regarding his family and his father, to tell her his father’s name and that he married his mother, who was beautiful and younger than him in age, but she died and her name was Saadia, so she became very faint and asked him: Is your real name Khaled?
Khaled was surprised that she knew his real name and replied that it was his real name, so Saadia Abdel Rahman, known as Amira Amir, fell into a coma, affected by her shock, and was immediately taken to the hospital, and when she woke up from her coma, she told him that she was his mother.
Khaled immediately called his aunt, who told him the truth that his mother had not died, and that she was a famous artist named Amira Amir, and Khaled was shocked following confirming the fact that he had married his mother, and immediately without thinking, he committed suicide, throwing himself in front of a car that was traveling in the street, so that the son and his mother died in same moment.
