  • Jamie Dornan had to go to the hospital because of a caterpillar.

  • First there was a tingling sensation in my left hand, then suddenly my entire left arm.

  • The tiny stinging hairs of processionary caterpillars, also known as processionary moths, contain the toxic protein thaumetopoein.

Jamie Dornan (41) had to call an ambulance while on holiday because of heart attack-like symptoms. His friend, presenter Gordon Smart (43), revealed this on a radio show. The “Good Morning Britain” host was in Portugal with the “Fifty Shades of Gray” star and other friends. After a first day of lots of golf and even more drinking, Smart started feeling suspicious symptoms the next day. First there was a tingling sensation in my left hand, then suddenly my entire left arm.

Got to the hospital with a resting heart rate of 120

As the son of a doctor, Gordon Smart knew immediately that these could be signs of a heart attack. He went to a doctor. A resting heart rate of 120 beats per minute was found. Smart was then taken to the hospital. On the way he collapsed and woke up in a hospital bed.

It probably wasn’t a heart attack. Gordon Smart was able to return to the hotel. There he finally met Jamie Dornan – who was attached to medical equipment. The actor apparently experienced similar symptoms to his friend. Dornan told him that his limbs had gone numb and he suddenly found himself in the back of an ambulance. First his left arm went numb, then his left leg and then his right.

Processionary caterpillars were to blame

It was only a week after the incident that the Portugal holidaymakers found out exactly what got them laid. Gordon Smart got a call from the doctor who treated him. It is said to have been an allergic reaction to the hair of caterpillars. “It turns out there are caterpillars on golf courses in southern Portugal that are killing people’s dogs and causing heart attacks in men in their 40s,” the presenter said.

The tiny stinging hairs of processionary caterpillars, also known as processionary moths, contain the toxic protein thaumetopoein. It can cause itching on human skin or, as with Jamie Dornan and Gordon Smart, more severe allergic reactions. In Europe, processionary moths are found primarily in the Mediterranean region.

By the way, Jamie Dornan is not only allergic to some butterflies, but also to horses. The actor once revealed this in an interview on the “Graham Norton Show”. The 41-year-old planted a kiss on a horse’s mouth while filming. His lips then swelled so much that filming was no longer an option.
