The Canadian director criticizes the current state of cinema, and more specifically the big franchises omnipresent in Hollywood.
These days, superhero films like Marvel and DC Comics are legion. It is absolutely not rare to see them on display as they are omnipresent in today’s cinema industry. While this situation pleases fans of the genre, many don’t appreciate how Hollywood is evolving. Several celebrities have spoken on this subject recently, such as Matt Damon (Saving Private Ryan) who believes that this type of film does not innovate in any way and contains scenarios that are very easy to follow and produce.
Legendary directors also wanted to share their vision of things, like Martin Scorsese who declared that superhero films are bad for cinema. According to him, it is the death of creativity, leaving too much importance to productions which give the impression of being carried out by Artificial Intelligence. James Cameron was less sharp on the subject by simply stating that this type of feature film is far from epic. However, although he did not express himself more on superhero films, he gave a fairly clear opinion on the major franchises which dominate cinema.

James Cameron doesn’t like big franchises
In the world of cinema, there are some directors who are among the legends of cinema. This is the case of James Cameron who has proven time and once more to what extent he masters this art to perfection in different registers. For this reason, he allows himself to be quite critical towards this industry which he particularly likes and whose evolution does not please him.. Thus, in an interview for Spiegel Online, the Canadian director used the film Battleship as an example to talk regarding the franchise system which he doesn’t like at all. For those who do not know this feature film released in 2012, it is quite simply a cinematographic adaptation of the naval battle with Liam Neeson and the singer Rihanna.
Now they want to make the naval battle game into a movie! This is pure despair, because it is now the “Sequel Business” that rules Hollywood, or as we call it: the franchise.
He then goes on to explain further why he hates this type of business which, according to him, is “years ahead”.
Everyone in Hollywood knows how important it is that the film, before it hits theaters, is already a brand. If a brand has been around for a long time, like Harry Potter or Spider-Man, you’re years ahead… And therein lies the problem. Unfortunately, these franchises are becoming more and more ridiculous. Battleship. This degrades cinema.
Whether it’s regarding superhero movies or big franchises in general that aren’t regarding characters with superpowered powers, James Cameron is very clear: they do not like them and at the same time consider them dangerous.
