The New Orleans Saints have re-signed quarterback Jameis Winston to a two-year, $28 million deal with $21 million guaranteed, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport report.
The Saints focused on keeping Winston following a failed attempt to acquire Deshaun Watson.
Winston started seven games for the Saints last season before tearing his cruciate ligament. He threw for 1,170 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 59% of his passes.
Winston previously had 70 starts for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who picked him first overall in 2015. He posted good stats for the Bucs but struggled with a lot of turnovers. In 2019, his senior year at Tampa Bay, he threw for 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.
The Saints went 5-2 under Winston last season but lost six of their last 11 games without him and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
New Orleans is keen to restore its passing attack, which has been among the NFL’s most efficient in years past. Star wide receiver Michael Thomas is close to returning to the team following missing the entire 2021 season with an injury.
