Adapted from Colleen Hoover’s bestseller, the poignant ending of Never Say Never leaves us speechless. Whether you want to watch it or you’ve just seen it, this analysis, halfway through the review, will give you another vision of this film that addresses a situation that is often trivialized, but that affects many people!
The ending of Never Say Never Again takes a different turn than Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel. While everything seems perfect on the surface, it seems that the love life of Lily Bloom, played by Blake Lively, is not easy. A toxic partner, an unhealthy relationship and the same violence that her mother experienced when she was just a child seem to be happening again. How will this relationship end? Let’s discover together the end of Nevermore below !
Never Again, these unexpected twists
After Ryle raped her, Lilly learns that she is pregnant. She then decides to leave him. The final scene is heartbreaking and the emotion is palpable. Except that the narrative arc will take a different path from what the author had written. If in the book Lily and Ryle find common ground to raise their child, the film adaptation chose to conclude differently.
Lily decides to cut ties with Ryle for goodrefusing to give her a second chance. A few years later, she reunites with Atlas, her childhood sweetheart played by Brandon Sklenar. In the closing scene of Nevermore, she tells him that it’s just “the two of them” now. This scene reflects a clear desire on the part of the film’s creators to give Lily the chance to regain control of her life, far from her toxic past.
Why did you choose a different ending for the film adaptation?
Justin Baldoni, who plays Ryle and also directed the film, explained that the decision to change the ending from the book was made in collaboration with the No More organization that fights against domestic and sexual violence.
As a result, both felt it would be difficult to justify a co-parenting relationship between Lily and Ryle, given the abuse the heroine had suffered. Thus, the film ends on a note of renewal and resilience for Lily, while Ryle is left alone, facing the consequences of his actions.
By adapting the ending in this way, the film highlights the powerful message of the importance of free yourself from toxic relationships and choose a better futureeven if it means saying goodbye to those who were once important.
