Jallikattu Tragedy: Two Killed and 70 Injured During Pongal Festival in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Two killed in Jallikattu on the occasion of Pongal in Tamil Nadu following being gored by a bull. 70 people were injured in the accident. The accident took place during the jallikattu at Siravayal village in Sivaganga district on Wednesday. The deceased have been identified as Rahul Bhaskaran, a 12-year-old resident of Valayampetty, and another man in his forties.

At the time of the incident, Minister Periyakaruppan, Karthichidambaram, District Collector etc. were present at the spot. About eighty thousand spectators were present at the scene. Some of the competing bulls rushed into the crowd. Rahul and the 40-year-old were rushed to the hospital but died. 275 bulls were brought to participate in the competition. 80 heroes participated in the competition.

The gift for Vijaya was a Nissan Magnet car. And each bull participating in the competition was given a gold coin. There was also an accident in Jellikattu at Arankanallur in Madurai district. Three people, including a policeman, were injured here. At Arankanallur, 1200 bulls and 800 bull tamers participated. 1500 police personnel were also deployed at the spot for security arrangements.

Jallikattu competitions in Tamil Nadu are very crowded on the occasion of Pongal. Jellikattu competitions are held for three days in the southern districts of the state. Competitions are held as per the guidelines of the respective District Collectors considering the danger. Medical team, veterinary team, Red Cross volunteers and ambulances have also been arranged to ensure safety.
