Salzburg ski mountaineers were in the top 10 on the Grossglockner Ultra Trail. Damaged thigh forced Aus following 78 of 110 kilometers.
Jakob Hermann loves the mountains. Werfenwenger has long made a name for himself as a ski mountaineer. But it is also one of the best in Austria on foot. Although Hermann had to cancel his start at the Trail Running World Championships in Tyrol this year due to injury, he was back at the start of the Großglockner Utra-Trail (GGUT) late on Friday evening.
Alternative route right decision
After two years ago he had finished third on the 50 km distance there, this time he dared to run the 110 km maximum distance. The 36-year-old welcomed the fact that the organizers had changed the route at short notice due to the weather. “It was the right decision to choose an alternative route, it’s great how the athletes are looked following. And since it then goes into the mountains, the GGUT remains a wonderful – and also top-organized – run as always,” said Herrman sure.
Downhill slips
However, the new route around Austria’s highest mountain did not bring him any luck. “I slipped downhill from the Kalser Tauern down to the Dorfertal due to carelessness, injured my thigh and was subsequently unable to walk downhill and on the flat,” reports the man from Salzburg. “I then jogged to Kals and started running once more up towards the Glorerhütte, but at the Salmhütte it was clear that I had to drop out of the race if I didn’t want to risk an even more serious injury.”
Next destination Mont Blanc
The end following 78 of 110 kilometers was all the more bitter because Hermann was still on course for the top 10 following more than 11:20 hours. “It would have been very nice to finish in the top three or even win, and obviously the disappointment is there now. But life goes on, I have the chance to settle this outstanding score next year,” he announces return to. Herrmann already has the next big challenge in mind. He plans to be part of the UTMB Mont-Blanc at the end of August in the ultratrail “Sur les Traces du Duc de Savoie”, which will cover 145 kilometers and almost 10,000 meters in altitude.
