Jake Paul’s Victory Over Mike Tyson Breaks Betting Records in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jake Paul‘s lopsided unanimous decision victory over the legendary former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson may have fallen flat from a competitive perspective, yet it sparked an unprecedented wave of betting activity.

According to figures from BetMGM, the highly publicized showdown between the social media sensation and the 58-year-old Tyson, who appeared to struggle with his agility and endurance, became the most-bet event in both boxing and mixed martial arts history within their platform. The sportsbook recorded an astonishing threefold increase in the number of bets placed and four times the financial amount wagered compared to any previously documented combat sport event.

Craig Mucklow, vice president of trading at Caesars Sportsbook, noted that the intense interest surrounding the fight rivaled the fervor typically reserved for a high-stakes NFL Monday night game.

“We anticipated a tremendous surge in interest for this fight, and the staggering betting activity validated that it was a generational matchup appealing to diverse customer demographics,” Mucklow explained. “Fans nostalgic for the prime era of Mike Tyson had the chance to relive those iconic moments, while a younger generation that may not have witnessed Iron Mike in his heyday passionately rallied behind Jake Paul.”

While the staggering amount of wagers placed can’t be easily compared to betting on historic fights, because many of Tyson’s memorable bouts took place before the legalization of sports betting in states beyond Nevada in 2018, the spectacle at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, nonetheless generated a colossal total handle.

At BetMGM Sportsbook, the majority of the wagers were placed on proposition bets, with the most popular selections leaning towards Tyson winning either by knockout, decision, or achieving a striking first-round KO.

Despite Paul being labeled a -175 favorite, a noteworthy 67% of the tickets and 53% of the overall money wagered at BetMGM backed Tyson.

“The outcome of Paul’s victory proved beneficial for the sportsbook overall,” commented BetMGM senior trader Alex Rella.
