Jake larsson, a familiar face to Örebro SK fans, made a bold move last year, venturing out of Sweden for the first time to join the powerhouse Lithuanian club FK Žalgiris. The club, boasting eleven national league titles and hailing from Vilnius, offered Larsson the chance to test himself on the European stage.
Larsson’s first season, while bringing the joy of contributing to an overwhelming league championship, was hampered by injuries.”It has been a fun and educational year,” he admitted to the Football Channel. “I had a lot of injury problems last season when I arrived late, while the season had already begun. I didn’t get a real preseason and had small flaws along the way, so I hope for a better year for me.”
He found breaking into Žalgiris’ winning lineup challenging. “It is challenging to get into a winning team,” he confessed. “We walked like a train and had ten to fifteen matches where we were undefeated, so it was difficult to settle in then.” Despite the setbacks, Larsson remained resolute. “It was very frustrating and I worked hard all the time to come back a hundred percent, but then I pulled something new. It wasn’t so damn fun, but now I’m a hundred. It has been a good preseason and I hope it lasts.”
The team’s success was undeniable. Žalgiris secured the league title with a commanding twelve-point lead, clinching it several rounds in advance. “It was super fun,” Larsson exclaimed. “I know how hard everyone worked every day on training to achieve that result. We had a great fact, so it was super fun.”
Larsson savored the team’s victory celebration, sharing the joy with both teammates and devoted fans. “We were clear winners quite early, with five to six matches left,so we didn’t celebrate very much then,” he explained. “ It was more at the end of the season, when we had a team party. We also celebrated with our supporters in connection with our last home game for the season. It was also great fun.”
They also tasted European competition, participating in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers. While their journey ended against Pafos from Cyprus in the second qualifying round, Larsson saw positives in the experience.“We won at home by 2-1 and then we got a red card in the first half away.We thus had a man less the whole match and also had a ball in the bar, as well as a doomed goal. It was sour, but that’s what it is. There is not much to do about it now.”
With a triumphant season under his belt,Larsson is focused on a strong pre-season leading into the 2025 campaign. “I know that if I am injury-free, play and get up to level, I will make a lot of points. I’m not worried about it, but then you can see in what crowd it will be. I have no goals now, as I take it as it comes. I know what I can do when I’m at my best. There is no talk about it.”
The ambition within Žalgiris is clear: to defend their title and make a deep run in the Champions League qualifiers. “It will be great fun. It’s something you dreamed of since you were a little guy, to qualify for the Champions League. It will be a great experience,” larsson emphasized.
Larsson’s journey is further enriched by the arrival of two fellow Swedes, Dino Salcinovic and Mohamed Youla, formerly of Örebro SK, further strengthening the bond between him and his new club. The trio bond goes beyond football,as Larsson shared,“It didn’t come as a surprise (that they would come),but I didn’t have a finger in the game. I only knew about the process a bit,as they have the same agency. It is incredibly fun to get two more Swedes in the team. It was good here before, but now it’s even better. We have been very much around in recent weeks.” He elaborated on their shared experiences off the pitch, revealing, “It’s been a little different. Now it has been a lot for them to fix an apartment, so I have helped them with it. We have been to IKEA and such. It will be mostly to take it easy, chill, watch movies, cook something and such. It is not the worst stuff, more to spend time from time to time.”
