SAN DIEGO — Jake Cronenworth hit two homers from four corners and totaled a career-high six RBIs as the San Diego Padres beat the Milwaukee Brewers 10-3 on Saturday.
For the first time in his career, Cronenworth hit more than one home run in a game. With it, he guided San Diego to a win over the leaders of the National League Central.
The Padres also snapped a three-game losing streak.
The eighth inning provided a chilling moment. Milwaukee reliever Gus Varland was hit in the jaw by a ball that flew at 105.1 mph from Manny Machado’s bat. Varland had to leave the match.
The force of the ball knocked the pitcher down, who staggered to his feet and dropped his glove as two teammates and a physical therapist rushed to his aid. Varland knelt while being attended to, before leaving, escorted by two people.
Cronenworth, who signed a seven-year, $80 million contract two weeks ago, broke the tie with a club shot that sent the ball over the right-field wall with two outs in the fifth inning once morest Freddy Peralta ( 2-1).
He hit his second home run to center field, with one out in the seventh, off Hoby Milner. She accumulates three homers in the year.
For the Brewers, the Dominican Willy Adames 5-1. The Mexican Rowdy Téllez from 4-2. Puerto Rican Víctor Caratini 4-4 with a run scored.
For the Padres, the Dominicans Manny Machado 5-1 with an RBI, Juan Soto 2-0 with three runs scored, Nelson Cruz 3-2 with one run scored and three produced. Venezuelan José Azocar 4-0 with a run scored.
