This weekend the “Jaime González” Airport in Cienfuegos resumed its international commercial operations.
The restart came following six years of inactivity in this regard. The revival flight was carried out by a Boeing 737 from the Albatros airline company of Venezuela.
This route links not only Cuba and Venezuela. It also involves three other nations from which it is planned to revitalize the various connections with central Cuba. By the way, the aforementioned airport is fully prepared to handle the growing influx of visitors, according to a report on National Television.
A representative of the Pearl of the South airport commented on the issue. “We are in a position to handle the transportation of all these clients. Passengers arriving through this route have different expectations and needs. It is very good for everyone, especially for those on a collaboration or tourism mission.”
Cuban tourism does not comply in 2023
As suspected, Cuban tourism did not meet its visitor arrival forecasts in 2023. This might already be predicted if we take into account the discreet results shown during the first quarter of this year.
However, the prevailing situation is more critical than might be inferred. Until last October, only 54% of the agreed plan for 2023 had been met. The National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) revealed that Cuba received 1,973,085 tourists in the first 10 months of 2023, far from the 3.5 million expected. .
However, this figure is a notable increase of 164.6% compared to the previous year, still affected by the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Canada continues to be the largest supplier of tourists to Cuba, with 748,976 visitors. It is followed by the Cuban diaspora, with 297,034 travelers, and then Russia and the United States, with 146,306 and 130,331 tourists, in that order.
