Jaguars coach Doug Peterson gave his son Josh a chance as a long snapper in the preseason game against the Cowboys. And the junior caused a stir.

The phase before the start of the season in the NFL is exciting, exciting, complex.

And corrosive. Sad. burdensome.

Because the coaches have to make a lot of uncomfortable decisions before the cuts. Hard, some of which are borderline, to trim the squad to the size of 53 players. And then have the appropriate conversations with the players.

It could be particularly tough for Doug Pederson. Because the Jacksonville Jaguars squad also includes his son Josh. The Jaguars signed the tight end a few weeks ago.

Pederson played all ten games for the Houston Gamblers this past season with the USFL. He caught 25 passes for 325 yards (not including a touchdown), which ranked third among tight ends in receiving yards.

Previously, Pederson was not selected in the 2021 NFL draft before signing with the San Francisco 49ers but was released in August and released shortly thereafter by the New Orleans Saints. In February 2022, he signed a reserve/future contract with the Kansas City Chiefs but was released in May. He then joined the Gamblers.

Unexpected chance

And now, quite unexpectedly, he was given a chance under his father. Long snapper Ross Matiscik injured his shoulder early in the game against the Dallas Cowboys. Pederson sent his son onto the field as a substitute.

Not everything went according to plan, which caused a lot of fun and discussion among NFL fans.

The probability that the son does not make it through the cut with the father has increased. Pederson was given little chance anyway in a competition for Evan Engram, rookie Brenton Strange, Luke Farrell and Gerrit Prince. He didn’t excel as a long snapper either. But there are still two games to come and maybe more chances.

“Unfortunately, Ross got knocked out on the first punt and we didn’t have a long snapper for the rest of the game,” said Doug Pederson. “We did a lot of 4th downs that we wouldn’t normally do and then a lot of two-point conversions that we wouldn’t normally do. It was good to see Josh step in and have punt snaps and be effective, but We’ll see where Ross is this week.”
