Jacob Newcombe’s Memorable Return: Eagles vs. Saguenéens

2024-01-19 03:12:00

The Cape Breton Eagpes made sure that Jacob Newcombe’s return to the lineup after his cancer remission was a memorable one.

Newcombe and the Eagles won by shutout, 3-0, Thursday night, against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, who incidentally were Newcombe’s first team in the QMJHL.

The 19-year-old left winger has been battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which he was diagnosed with last fall.

At Center 200, the evening had the theme “Hockey Fights Cancer”, the first evening of its kind organized by the Eagles.

Newcombe, who is originally from Nova Scotia, received the bad news in August 2023. His treatments lasted until December, and he spent the last few weeks getting back into shape, having officially entered remission.

It’s no surprise that Newcombe was named first star of the game.

Antoine Roy, Lucas Romeo and Charles-Antoine Lavallée, in each of the three periods, were the Eagles’ scorers. Nicola Ruccia made 29 saves for the shutout.

Nothing is going well for the Saguenéens, who have been defeated in their last eight outings. It was the second time in a row that Chicoutimians were silenced.

Hats for Lacerte

Félix Lacerte scored a hat trick and the Shawinigan Cataractes defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs 6-1.

The Cataractes led 3-0 at the first intermission.

Jiri Klima scored in the second minute of play, then Lacerte scored twice in 3:02 at the end of the period.

Lacerte completed the hat-trick into an empty net, scoring his 20th goal this season.

Jordan Tourigny and Noah McKinnon were the other scorers for the Cataractes, who had lost their last two games.
