What happened?
The Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Giorgio Jacksonalso reacted to the sayings of the President Gabriel Boricwho assured that in the event that the Rejection option triumphs in the exit plebiscite on September 4, a new constitutional process must be carried out.
The Secretary of State supported the statements of the President, affirming that the drafting of a new Magna Carta and the mechanism to carry it out had already been approved by the citizens in the 2020 plebiscite.
What did Jackson say?
“What the President has proposed is that on October 25, 2020 there was a very majority will that 80% of the population opted for a process of a New Constitution to be initiated and that at the same time it be drafted by people who fulfilled that purpose,” said the minister.
When asked why Boric poses this scenario, he replied: “After so many times that he insisted on asking, the President ends, with the leadership that characterizes him, manifesting a path that is a democratic path“.
“A process begins, elections and a new text”
“In the event that the Approval option comes out, the Government will work to implement the New Constitution and improve those things that need to be improvedwithin the proposal that was put on the table,” Jackson stressed.
“On the other hand, in the case of Rejection, a process begins, elections, new text on blank pagewhich obviously must be endorsed by the public later,” he added.
In addition, he maintained that “this is a decision made by the President, which we discussed within the political committee, and that the President makes a decision to provide certainty to the population.”
What had Boric said?
The President stated in an interview with the CHV morning that “if the Rejection is won, what will happen is that we are going to have to prolong the process for another year and a halfwhere everything will have to be discussed from scratch”.
As a result of the above, he was emphatic in pointing out that, in the event of this scenario, “there must be a new constituent process“.
Regarding the election of new conventions, Boric indicated that “this is the path that Chile chose to take on October 25 (2020), in a plebiscite for a New Constitution, that it be drafted by a 100% elected body for that purpose“.
