Various reactions have been generated by President Gabriel Boric’s announcement regarding a possible new constituent process in the event that the Rejection wins in the plebiscite on September 4. The Segpres minister, Giorgio Jackson, said that this issue was discussed with the political committee and it seemed reasonable to him that this “be transmitted openly to the citizenry.”

The Secretary of State said that Boric demonstrated the leadership that characterizes him and manifested “a democratic path, it is a path that in the event that the Approval option comes out, the Government will work to implement the new Constitution and improve those things that It is necessary to improve within the proposal that was put on the table”.
“In the case of Rejection, a process begins, elections, new text on a blank page, which obviously has to be endorsed by the citizens later,” Jackson said.

The minister also said that “this is a decision made by the president, which we discussed by the way within the Political Committee, and the president is ultimately the one who makes a decision, which I imagine it is to deliver certainty to the population”.
“For several months it was the media, the parliamentarians and parliamentarians of the National Congress who asked the president ‘what is going to happen the day following the plebiscite’,” said the former deputy.

When asked if the people want a new Constitutional Convention, the minister said that “It will be the citizens who choose. On September 4 we have the opportunity to have a new constitutional text.”
“And that this allows us to implement it and improve those things that can be improved in the text, according to the rules that the proposal for the new Constitution itself establishes, or to initiate a process that means calling elections, which will have to be agreed upon by the mechanism in Congress. ”, detailed Jackson.
Thus, he also stressed that “the only mandate that exists as a precedent, from which one must start, is that of the previous mandate, with which a broad consensus was reached on how he should be elected.
