The Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Giorgio Jackson, responded from La Moneda to the criticism of the State of Exception that is in force in the South Macrozone, which indicates that the latest acts of violence recorded in the sector occurred for a “limited state”.
In context, this Tuesday morning a group of forestry workers were injured following suffering an ambush at the hands of an undetermined number of hooded men in Capitan Pastene, La Araucanía Region, a sector that is also under a state of emergency.
According to police information, three people were injured and one of them – a 66-year-old man – died following receiving a bullet to the head at a time when the workers were traveling on a bus near the San Óscar Camp.
The situation has not left anyone indifferent on the political and national spectrum. The prosecutor of La Araucanía defined it as “an event of special gravity”, the presidential delegate of the same region condemned the ambush and along with it announced the presentation of a criminal complaint, and President Gabriel Boric was categorical in saying that “We will not tolerate violence being imposed as a method of resolving conflicts in our country, not in schools, not in La Araucanía, nowhere”.
Meanwhile, from the other side, parliamentarians from the National Renewal (RN), reiterated that the State of Exception is “insufficient” and did not rule out initiating constitutional accusations.
Deputy Jorge Rathgeb He said that “when the state of exception was decreed that protected only some routes, we said it was insufficient and today time has proved us right with the number of acts of violence and workers shot.”
For his part, deputy Miguel Mellado expressed: “President, the state of emergency salmon-type horse mackerel that you delivered for the region of La Araucanía and for Arauco -which is somewhat limited-, is absolutely useless (…). If you do not come to La Araucanía, we will begin to attack your government where it hurts the most: with constitutional accusations.”
So it was within this framework that the Segpres minister indicated that “Such sensitive situations, like the ones that have occurred today, do not admit being exploited politically.”
“I think it is something that we have to address as a country, which also happened when there was a State of Exception before we took office, people also died in this context and therefore I don’t think it’s a reason for someone to be making a political calculation”, added the Secretary of State.
Finally, he stated that the State of Exception is in force “precisely for what was mandated”, and that any news in this regard will be communicated by the Ministry of the Interior or the Ministry of Defense.
