Jackson affirms that there is a “lack of control” in the possession of weapons in the population after the shooting of three people in Barrio Meiggs

The Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Giorgio Jackson, referred this morning to a serious event that occurred yesterday followingnoon in the Meiggs neighborhood, in the commune of Santiago.

In that place, in the context of a march for Workers’ Day, three people were shot by unknown assailants. Among the victims, who were taken to the former Posta Central, is the journalist of the medium Señal 3 La Victoria, Francisca Sandoval, who remains in vital risk, following being shot in the face.

Carabineros reported that there two arrested at the 3rd Police Station in Santiago for allegedly shooting protesters. Both subjects are of foreign nationality, one is Colombian and the other Venezuelan.

The government condemned the facts and filed a lawsuit. This morning, in an interview with ADN radio, Jackson said that security and public order “is a concern that for us as a government is absolutely present”

“Yesterday the spokesperson minister, the minister for women, the minister of the interior, as well as the undersecretary of health at the Posta were present to send a signal that these things cannot go unpunished,” he said.

“The government through the Ministry of the Interior has already sued and the images are being reviewed so that any procedure regarding this matter does not go without sanction and the corresponding persecution,” he added.

Jackson stated that “there is an issue related to arms control that is going to be a priority for us.” In that sense, the Secretary of State assured that in recent years arms control has been “increasingly serious.” In fact, he cataloged it as “lack of control of the possession of weapons that exists in the population and especially in organized crime gangs”.

Without a doubt, this is one of the country situations that are somehow inherited from this month and a half that we have been in, it is a situation with which we start and we are not going to spare resources or measures to go to the underlying issue and resolve it,” he said.

Finally, regarding what measures the government will take to combat crime in that sector, he said that “yesterday we had a coordination from the political committee in which we made several definitions that are going to be carried out during the week. Each of these measures has a strategic nature.

At night, meanwhile, the President Gabriel Boric interviewed on TVN also addressed the incidents and pointed out that the government is going to “apply all the forces of law to dismantle criminal gangs” such as those that operate in Estación Central. And before the escalation of violence that is observed in the country, he added: “What is happening is unacceptable and here there can be no half measures; we are naturalizing violence in our country in every sense”
