Jackals again! They are being noticed more and more often in Latvia (+VIDEO)

This time the message came from Liepaja. A forest camera installed near a destroyed beaver dam captured a pair of adult jackals exploring the home of large rodents and looking for an opportunity to enter it!

The jackal population is spreading faster and faster. The situation on Lake Liepaja is dire: everyone can hear the howling of jackals, some of them have been hunted, reports a local huntress.

A special camera has been installed near the dam to monitor the situation. If previously two jackals were regularly seen in the cell, now there is only one. It is allowed that the female stays in the hole with the pups while the male gets food. Jackals are paired animals in which the male takes care of the female.

Jackals are a new, invasive and recently introduced species of the canine family in Latvia. It was first hunted in December 2013 near Jelgava. In subsequent years, several more individuals were shot in Zemgale and Kurzeme. There is an opinion that the golden jackal entered Latvia from the southeast through Ukraine and the northern part of Belarus. Recently, isolated cases of jackal sightings have been reported even in the Netherlands.

It is still difficult to judge the permanent introduction of the jackal into Latvia, since the number of probable individuals, the regularity of the introduction in the long term and the ability to adapt to local conditions are unclear. It is possible that jackals that escaped from captivity also roam in some parts of Europe. Crossbreeding of too closely related individuals can be crucial for the short-term presence of individual individuals in an isolated group, because the lifespan of the jackal is not particularly long.
