“Jack Miller’s MotoGP Le Mans Sprint Misfortune: Learning from Tire Choice Mistakes for A Stronger Sunday Race”

2023-05-14 07:11:07

Jack Miller was in a promising position in the lead group with Marc Marquez and the Ducati aces in the Le Mans MotoGP sprint when he slid into the gravel trap on Lap 2 and ended his chances. Miller’s Red Bull KTM teammate Brad Binder once again took the opportunity in the hectic sprint – drove from P10 to 2nd place.

“It was unfortunate. We had a strong weekend,” summarizes Miller. “The temperatures went up a bit in the afternoon, so I chose the medium front tire. I may have listened a little more to the information around me than to my own feelings. That’s why I chose the medium tire.”

Thriller Miller remembers: “I did 27 laps with the soft tire in the morning, felt good, and I used the soft in the 2022 race as well.”

Jack confesses: “I’m new to KTM and I’ve listened to Michelin’s input. I’m still gathering information. That’s one of those things when you’re new somewhere. I know the bike quite well, but not so well that I can decide everything myself and trust my path 120 percent. It was just a small mistake.”

Miller reveals: “I’ve heard Brad’s comments; he was whining. He also had the medium mounted in the sprint, but he doesn’t like the soft tire at all. Brad already used the medium tire in the morning. I hate the medium tire. I generally have no problems with the calendar, the new format and the schedule. We see the tire allocation before the weekend and make our plan.”

The sprint immediately raised the first doubts: «I had a few problems right from the start and didn’t have that much confidence. On the second lap I just wanted to get into the ideal temperature range, but unfortunately I couldn’t stay seated. It was a shame, but we learned from it. We’ll see what happens in the main race on Sunday, that’s all we can do. We had a great qualifying session in the morning, we’re on row 2 and we have good pace.”

Miller mused: “I felt very strong. Don’t get me wrong – Jorge did a fantastic sprint race, the speed was very high. But maybe I could have challenged Jorge. We will now look closely at the data, analyze a little more, then make our choices better and start again.”

«We are fast on Saturdays and Sundays. Saturday was unlucky here, but we’ll get another chance,” said the 28-year-old Australian. “The main focus now is, of course, to get the maximum out of it on Sunday. We have a fantastic bike, we now have to choose the right tire combination. At the back, everything looks like the soft tire – everyone will probably do it that way. It’s the front tire. And then we’ll get on with it.”

Miller believes he has already found a solution: “I’m more planning with the soft now. I’d rather accept a bit of worry about degrading tires at the end than lack confidence at the beginning.”
