MADRID (AP) — Defending champion Ons Jabeur withdrew from the Madrid Open on Monday with a left hamstring injury, hampering her preparation for next month’s French Open.
The 28-year-old Tunisian, seeded fourth at the clay-court tournament, retired on Saturday trailing 3-0 in the first set of the Stuttgart semifinal once morest world number one Iga Swiatek.
Jabeur posted what he called “an update on his situation” on Twitter on Monday, saying he had “a lot of medical tests” that revealed “a small tear” in his hamstring.
“He will need more recovery time,” he said, adding that “I was sad to announce that he will not be able to compete” in Madrid.
The action in the main draw of the Madrid Open begins on Tuesday. Jabeur is the latest high-profile tennis player to withdraw due to physical problems. In previous days, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal – both with 22 Grand Slam titles – ruled out their participation.
Jabeur reached two major finals in 2022: Wimbledon and the US Open.
She came into the 2022 French Open as one of the favorites for the title following her successful clay season, including the title in Madrid, but lost in the first round of the Parisian Slam.
Roland Garros starts in Paris on May 28.
