Ja Morant Self-Defense Lawsuit: Memphis Grizzlies Guard’s Legal Battle Explained

2023-11-17 04:10:31

Lawyers for Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant can argue he acted in self-defense in a lawsuit accusing him of assaulting a teenager during a basketball game, a judge ruled Thursday.

Circuit Court Judge Carol Chumney has scheduled a hearing on December 11 in which attorneys for Ja Morant and 18-year-old Joshua Holloway will discuss whether Ja Morant can be exempted from liability under Tennessee law for a July 2022 death at his Memphis-area home. Joshua Holloway was responsible for the hit in the game.

Ja Morant’s attorney admitted that Ja Morant punched and kicked Joshua Holloway following Holloway hit Ja Morant in the jaw with a basketball.

In a July 26 motion, Ja Morant’s attorneys said he should be immune from liability under the state’s “stand your ground” law, which allows people who feel threatened in their homes to use force in certain situations.

Ja Morant is currently serving a suspension. The NBA suspended him for 25 games due to his second shooting.
