When you think of J.J. Wattyou probably think of all the sacks, all the years of dominance along the Houston Texans‘ defensive line — and for a couple seasons in Arizonaat the tail end of his career. The five-time All-Pro is retired now, but he remains very plugged in to the NFL — as he revealed Thursday, with a major scoop.

Watt beat NFL insiders to the news that the Cardinals were releasing his former teammate, tight end Zach Ertz. Watt, imitating Adam Schefter for a day, said that the three-time Pro Bowl selection is hoping to sign with a Super Bowl contender following two-and-a-half seasons in the desert. For Watt, the news break might be the start of an intriguing post-football career rivaling the sport’s most accurate reporters — or a way to pass the time on a slow Thursday.

Why the Cardinals are waiving Ertz

As for the transaction itself, the rebuilding Cardinals are moving forward with second-year tight end Trey McBridewho has been one of the few bright spots for 2-10 Arizona. McBride will be the clear-cut first-string tight end from here.

Ertz asked for the Cardinals to waive him so that he might sign with a championship contender. The 33-year-old is nearing the end of his highly-productive NFL career and is hoping to get fitted for a second Super Bowl ring before he goes. Ertz won the Super Bowl with Philadelphia during the 2017 season and has played in eight postseason games during his 11-year career.

Eagles to pursue a reunion?

Ertz remains well-liked in Philadelphia — he returned to the city in May and threw out a ceremonial first pitch at a Phillies game. Seeing as the Eagles don’t have starting tight end Dallas Goedert at the moment, Ertz’s request to be waived might have been prefaced by an overture from Philly to recover his services in time for the playoffs.

The Eagles nearly won Super Bowl LVII last season and are hopeful of emerging from the NFC as conference champions for the second consecutive year. Philadelphia has the NFL‘s best record at 10-1 and will probably secure home-field advantage through the conference playoffs once more. If Ertz re-signs, he’ll be in a great position to cap his career with another championship.
