Ivory Coast: Indignation after the cancellation of a concert by Tiken Jah Fakoly

Tiken Jah announced, a few hours ago, a sad news to his fans and especially to the inhabitants of the popular commune of Abobo. Artist Tiken Jah Fakoly has announced the cancellation of his concert scheduled for Sunday, January 02, 2022 at the Rond-point d’Abobo Banco. Through a post on Facebook, the reggae singer gave the reasons for this cancellation. For him, this is a disagreement with the municipal authorities on the choice of the site. The Ivorian reggae Man wanted to pay tribute to Hamed Bakayoko “so that politicians follow his example”.

“The artist proposes, the authorities of the municipality have, they have decided that the concert is canceled, the concert is therefore canceled”. It is with this bitter sentence that Tiken Jah divulges the news of the cancellation of his concert initially scheduled for Sunday, January 2, 2002. During the short video he made on his Facebook page, he explains how the authorities have not played fair with him.

“Hello dear brothers from Abidjan, dear brothers and sisters from Abobo and Ivory Coast too. I come here to tell you through this video that the Abobo concert which was scheduled for January 2, on the boulevard where there is the 2nd stop, has been canceled by the town hall authorities. Two days before the concert, it was announced that we had to change the site. This site that we had chosen together, they tell us that this site cannot host this concert. While this is the 4th site, each time we find a site, there is a reason we are given, ”announces the artist-reggae.

Tiken Jah continues by shouting his indignation at the attitude of the municipal authorities. “At 48 hours, changing the site of a concert following having communicated for a month and a half, we found that it is not professional, it is impossible. So the concert was canceled because the authorities asked us to find another venue. We do not know the real reasons, but this site was chosen by mutual agreement with the authorities of the town hall, “insists the artist.

In a press release made public this Sunday, January 2, 2022, the town hall authorities have specified that they have no “interest in opposing the holding of said concert”. However, such a concert cannot take place in defiance of the measures initiated by the public authorities as part of the fight once morest COVID-19 at a time when we are recording an upsurge in contamination.

Joint press release from the Ministries of Health and Culture

It should be remembered for all intents and purposes that the Ministries of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage and Culture and the Promotion of the Arts and the Performing Arts produced a joint press release dated December 30, 2021 which establishes the conditions for the organization of shows during this critical period.

In accordance with the instructions reiterated in this press release, the Municipality of Abobo proposed to the staff of Tiken Jah Fakoly to hold their concert on a site where we can install a device for washing hands and distributing nose shields to spectators. The latter opposed a categorical refusal, clinging to their will to organize the concert on the expressway, as it had been agreed before the government decision.
