Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara made a friendly and working visit to Libreville on Saturday (April 29th) during which he met with his Gabonese counterpart, Ali Bongo Ondimba.

A press release from the Ivorian presidency specifies that this visit is part of the strengthening and consolidation of the excellent relations of friendship, brotherhood and cooperation that exist between Côte d’Ivoire and Gabon.

In this regard, President Ouattara revealed that the Gabonese Prime Minister and his government will have a working session with the Ivorian side to review the state of cooperation between the two countries and schedule the next meeting of the large Joint Commission. of cooperation which will enable decisions to be taken on specific dossiers.

The President of the Republic congratulated his Gabonese counterpart on the occasion for his commitment to the protection and preservation of the environment as well as for the successful organization of the “One Forest Summit” in March 2023, in Gabon, which highlighted the harmful consequences of pollution and the degradation of our ecosystem, particularly in Africa.

He hoped, according to the press release, that the recommendations of this Summit be effectively implemented, especially since the African continent contributes very little to this degradation of the environment, ie 4% of global pollution.

Referring to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis and its consequences on African economies, the Head of State specified that in Côte d’Ivoire, “things are going relatively well, with an inflation rate of around 5%, despite rising food costs. Anything that has led the State to release significant financial resources to subsidize certain products in order to preserve the purchasing power of the populations, ”we emphasize.

Finally, on the question of the single West African currency, the Eco, Mr. Ouattara indicated that discussions continue to be held, both at the level of Heads of State and the ECOWAS Commission, affirming that significant progress has been made on the issue of convergence, particularly with regard to inflation, growth and the deficit.

Thus, in 2020, a number of countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, had already met almost all of the convergence criteria, the statement noted, adding that unfortunately the Covid-19 pandemic created a deficit and significant inflation rates, especially in countries with currencies with flexible exchange rates.

In view of this situation, the Ivorian president thinks that the Eco will not be able to be put in place for a few years, says the same source.
