“I’ve heard rumours”: Lithuanians going to Belarus told about possible (non)recruitment

The assessment of threats to national security published on Thursday announced that Belarusian special services are trying to recruit Lithuanians going to Belarus, and the head of the State Security Department (VSD) Darius Jauniškis said that they are trying to recruit every one a Lithuanian citizen who often goes to Belarus.

The document states that several Lithuanian citizens were arrested last year, who are suspected of collaborating with Belarusian intelligence. It is likely that they collected and transmitted certain information regarding critical infrastructure and military facilities for a reward.

The head of the second operational services department (AOTD) Elegijus Paulavičius testified that these persons were recruited while going to Belarus.

The majority of those going to Belarus are Belarusians

At the moment, it is possible to enter Belarus only through two border checkpoints – Medininkai and Šalčininkai, where long lines of passenger cars are now standing.

15min went to the border at Medininkai. There are mostly cars with Belarusian license plates parked here. There are also cars with registrations from other countries, but they are also driven by Belarusians, who drive these cars to sell in their country.
