Ius Italiae, Forza Italia files the citizenship law proposal –

Forza Italia‘s bill on the «ius Italiae» was filed today in the Senate and the Chamber. It is, we read in a note from the party founded by Silvio Berlusconi, “a text that contains an innovative principle because it combines the recognition of citizenship with the actual attendance of 10 years of compulsory schooling by foreign children born or arrived in Italy by the fifth year of age”. For «the first time ever», states the press release, «an element of qualitative seriousness is therefore introduced in the procedure for recognizing citizenship which, while to date, is granted at the age of eighteen, without any verification of the actual inclusion in society and without any reference to the level of education achieved. Our proposed text is, however, strictly related to the acquisition – through a scholastic path – of those linguistic, cultural and legal elements necessary to be defined as truly ‘Italian'”.
