Elhadj Diouma Bah, founder of the Bah-Kane schools and the University Institute for Advanced Studies in Guinea IUHEG1

In his communication, Elhadj Diouma Bah, founder of the Bah-Kane schools and the University Institute of Higher Studies of Guinea (IUHEG) delivered the objective of this meeting. “As you know, the baccalaureate results have been announced. Some children are admitted to continue their studies at the university level. So, it is important to organize these kinds of meetings to equip the children, to make them understand how studies at the university level work. You know that our country, since 2008, has switched its university education system to the LMD system. The LMD system, once again, is a pedagogical approach very poorly understood by students. So, it was important for us to bring together a certain number of admitted people at the Conakry level, give this conference by eminent personalities who participated in the implementation of this LMD pedagogical approach, explain to the children how the system of studies at university level. This allows children to be more consistent, more prepared to face the university cycle. This is the objective for which we brought together within the university campus, some admitted at the level of Conakry to draw their attention to the requirements of the LMD system, the imperatives, the requirements and how the system works at the university level, “he said. -he explains.

Continuing his explanations, Elhadj Diouma Bah said that his institution is part of an innovation process for the good of graduates wishing to continue their training there. “Innovation today is all the technologies that need to be put in place to change our learning methods. You have seen, Covid19 has even revolutionized learning. Today, you can have a teacher who is in Sydney, Australia, have students in Conakry, have another teacher in Montreal, Canada, etc. And all this is accompanied by technology, innovation. Therefore, the IUHEG is part of the innovation framework by putting new technologies in place, naturally supported by the internet and IT. At the level of the IUHEG, we have undertaken a vast program of renovation of our programs and we have introduced a lot of new equipment at the level of the university campus. But beyond that is partnership. We were able to identify the universities abroad and some of the Guinean compatriots who went to study and who came back with very good diplomas, we created a partnership system with them to allow us to supervise and support our students in order to that they are not only competitive in the labor market, but also that they are at the same level in the context of learning with other children from other countries,” said the founder of the IUHEG.

Ibrahima Moriyah Conté, vice-rector at Kofi Annan University of Guinea

For his part, Ibrahima Moriyah Conté, vice-rector at the Kofi Annan University of Guinea, provided more details on the characteristics of the LMD system. “There are the main characteristics of the LMD system. If these characteristics are not known and mastered within the framework of the organization of teaching, you cannot evolve. This is the semester, the credit, which is the responsibility of the student. Credit is not the teacher’s workload. But that’s the student’s workload. With us, one credit is equal to 25 hours. And since we said it’s 150 hours, we imposed a certain number of criteria, standards. We said that we can no longer do more than 5 lessons per week. These 5 lessons that must be done per week must lead to 30 credits. For the 30 courses, a course has 6 credits, and the 6 credits multiplied by 25 gives 150 hours…. So the work of the student is fundamental. And there is a transversal course that we must introduce. This transversal course is IT, English and the technique of French expression… Any student who enters university should not leave university without it. This is what allowed us to put in place all the necessary texts, regulating the LMD system. The fundamental objective is that all those who enter university or those who are in university, whether when they leave they are employed or self-employed”, launched the vice-rector of Kofi Annan University.
