Ituri: “Women and young girls fear rape in Irumu territory” (civil society)

Bunia, March 12, 2024 – The Ituri civil protection service warns of cases of sexual violence and several other cases of attempted rape which animate young people in mining quarries in the chiefdom of Walendu Bindi, in the province of ‘Ituri in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The entities cited are the Boloma and Baviba groups located in Irumu territory. According to its coordinator Robert Njalonga, the perpetrators of these inhumane acts are young people in a state of intoxication, drinkers of highly alcoholic drinks who wander here and there in these corners.

These immoral people are accused in particular of attacking women and young girls en route from the markets to the shores of Lake Albert to do their dirty work.

A situation which frightens the latter, making it difficult to normally visit their fields and carry out their commercial activities at the risk of being victims of these executioners.

“A few cases of sexual violence and several cases of attempts by young people in a drunken state are reported in mining quarries in the Boloma and Baviba groups and also on market days which are near the edge of Lake Albert in the Zadhu group in Walendu Bindi chiefdom for some time. Mothers and daughters develop fear to normally frequent the fields and markets at the risk of being victims”he said.

Civil protection thus pleads for the involvement of the competent authorities, the security service and community leaders in order to stop this threat which weighs on gender in this part of the Irumu territory.
