It’s true that India won, but there are four people in the team who don’t know how to bat: Wasim Jaffer

Former opener Wasim Jaffer has opened up that he is not happy with the performance of the Indian team in the first ODI once morest Sri Lanka. Wasim Jaffer said that India still needs to improve and the team combination is not right. He was analyzing the match on ESPN Cricinfo’s show.

Jaffer’s argument is that Indian batting should be tried in a way that scores more runs. He said that the four bowlers who might not bat significantly were a concern.

“Muhammad Shami batting at number 8 is a concern for me. India scored 370 runs but Shami and Siraj combined for just 17 runs in the last three overs. This is a matter to consider.

Especially when there are situations where early wickets are falling in the chase stages and 8-10 runs are needed on an average in an over.

If Shami is at number 8, it is worth thinking regarding how India will conduct the run chase if such a situation arises. Such problems should be solved by thinking ahead. India should consider whether to play two seamers along with Hardik Pandya, or whether to have all-rounders like Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur in the team.

With the arrival of two specialist pacers and Hardik Pandya as a pace all-rounder, it should be checked whether all-rounders Washington Sundar or Shardul Thakur can be fielded. There are currently no batters following number 7. The three pacers who can bowl at a speed of more than 140 kmph are an asset to the team from a bowling point of view.

In the first ODI, India did not try to get Sri Lankan captain Shanaka out. Shanaka and the Indian bowlers had a fight at one stage. This series will continue in the same way. For a long time, India seemed unable to figure out how to contain and dismiss Shanaka.

Had it not been for Shanaka’s century, Sri Lanka would have lost the game by a huge margin. It was an amazing innings. As the captain, he led the team from the front. A better contribution from the top batsmen would have brought Lanka closer to the target. But the credit goes to Shanaka for saving Lanka from a big defeat,’ said Wasim Jaffer.

India was expected to score 400 runs in the first ODI once morest Sri Lanka in Guwahati. But in the last three overs when Mohammad Shami and Mohammad Siraj batted, only 17 runs were scored. With this, India was limited to 373 for seven wickets in 50 overs.

In the top order, captain Rohit Sharma 83 off 67 balls, fellow opener Shubman Gill 70 off 60 balls and number three Virat Kohli shone with 113 off 87 balls. India won the match by 67 runs following Lanka’s reply was limited to 306 runs for eight wickets in 50 overs. The second ODI of the three-match series will be played in Kolkata tomorrow. India can win the series if they win.
