Jusant will be out soon. If you’re looking for a more chilled atmosphere on Halloween, this is definitely the game for you. And the Steam Neo Fest confirms it.
A harmonious breath of air
Around or on Halloween itself, it is not uncommon to see new horror games popping up. This is particularly the case for World of Horror, which will exit early access on October 19, or for the hybrid Little Goody Two Shoes, available from the 31st (demo available as part of the Steam Neo Fest). But there are others who take the opposite view of this tacit logic. Games that choose to be released on Halloween and yet have nothing horrible in them, quite the contrary. Well, this is particularly the case for Jusant, whose demo is also available during the Steam Neo Fest, a demo festival which takes place on the Valve platform until October 16. The opportunity for us to tell you a little regarding this little nugget from Don’t Nod and revealed during the last Xbox Games Showcase.
We know the French studio for its narrative productions like Life is Strange or Tell Me Why. Obviously, there had to be a strong story in Jusant as well, this time tinged with mystery and poetry. But the narration will be mainly environmental in this demo. The desert but wonderful world of Jusant has a lot to tell. It takes us in fact to what looks like the traces of a past civilization. It’s intriguing and we definitely want to know what happens next. But above all, this story which is revealed in fits and starts is linked to a meditative atmosphere which feels good. The world of Jusant is a real breath of fresh air. Of course, everything is carried by a fine soundtrack, lush nature and a sober but truly successful AD. On the game’s Steam page, the developers invite us to let “Wonder away by the meditative atmosphere of Jusant.” And the promise is kept, at least for the duration of this demo!
Always higher, always stronger
Jusant also presents itself as “a unique gaming experience, combining climbing, action and puzzle.” But the most important aspect of gameplay is of course the first. The goal is in fact to reach the top of a dizzying tower. Obviously, the climbing part is therefore central. And it works. The mechanics are easy to learn. In addition, Jusant is clearly a game that aims to be accessible. Far from being punitive, it always offers ways to make up for it if you miss a shot or mismanage your stamina gauge. In a way, this benevolence contributes to the soothing side of the title. We quickly get into a reassuring routine, little by little chaining together the commands in a harmonious way. But be careful, the routine is not the same throughout! If the game offers accessible basic mechanics, they become more complex over time. It gives a pleasant rhythm to this evolving adventure which gradually opens up to new horizons.
We feel rewarded as much by the successful ascent as by the arrival of new mechanics. These will allow you to have a little more choice in your approach, to think regarding which is the best path to take. And then there is the meeting with Ballast. This cute little creature should serve the narrative as well as the gameplay. Obviously, we see a little inspiration there from Fumito Ueda, a big fan of stories featuring relationships between two characters. It remains to be seen how relevant this comparison will be once the final game is released. As a reminder, you won’t have to wait long. Jusant is in fact scheduled for October 31 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
