“It’s not up to me,” says Sheinbaum in response to Machado’s request about Maduro and Venezuela

Mexico City, Aug 12 (EFE).-Mexican President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum responded on Monday to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado who said she would recognize Edmundo González’s victory in the July 28 elections. It is not up to her, because “that is what international organizations are for.”

Last week, Machado called on the Mexican government and its president-elect to listen to “the pain of Venezuelan mothers” and to maintain “increasing pressure” on the “regime” of Nicolás Maduro in order to achieve a peaceful and negotiated transition in Venezuela.

“It’s not up to me, there are international organizations for that,” Sheinbaum said at a press conference on Monday, reaffirming the line of argument that Mexico has maintained regarding the crisis in Venezuela, in response to which they are calling for transparency in the counting of votes.

Sheinbaum said Machado’s request was the result of a “trap” by journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva, a critic of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

“We respect everyone, but above all we respect the right of Venezuelans to decide who governs them, and if there is a problem, there are international institutions for that,” insisted the future Mexican president.

The Mexican government has maintained a wait-and-see attitude in the face of the crisis in Venezuela, where the National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed Nicolás Maduro re-elected president despite the disputed election on July 28.

While other Latin American countries such as Ecuador and Argentina have recognised the victory of opposition candidate Edmundo González, Mexico is calling for transparency and asking to wait for a final verdict from the electoral court on the result, a position it shares with Brazil and Colombia.

Meanwhile, protests are continuing in Venezuela and the Maduro government is strongly repressing them. The latter recently ordered the closure of the social network X in the country and refuses to acknowledge the possibility of an eventual defeat in the last elections, as demanded by the opposition.
