Liberation Day should be a day of jubilation for everyone. A phrase that the left has been repeating, like a mantra, for decades. According to the progressives, the right has not come to terms with its past and would have difficulty renouncing the twenty years of Mussolini. Yet, when the leftists find themselves faced with an openly anti-fascist mayoral candidate, who reiterated that, “as a German, I am ashamed of what the Germans did”, they compete to denigrate him. This morning Eike Schmidt, with the handkerchief of Aned (the national deportees’ association) tied around her neck, took part in the demonstration held in Piazza della Signoria, in Florence. Together with him the group leader of Forza Italia in the Region, Marco Stella, Federico Bussolin, group leader of the League at Palazzo Vecchio and the senator of Fratelli d’Italia, Paolo Marcheschi.
The latter recounted an unpleasant episode through his Facebook page. “As always I attended the Liberation ceremony. At the end of the procession, while I was talking to a trader, two ladies approached me with pointing fingers and flags and scarves around their necks: ‘We were celebrating the Liberation, understand?’ And I said: ‘Me too, even if you think it’s just your party. And it is precisely for this reason that the square is not as full as it should be. Until we meet once more”. But it’s not enough. Online you can read comments ranging from a banal “the German, why does he come to our square?” from Alberto to a much more scandalous “I don’t want fascists and especially those who pretend not to be fascists” from Alessandra. “Anti-fascism unites everyone, in Italy and in Europe. It is a maximum value, it must not be divisive – recalled Eike Schmidt, on the sidelines of today’s event – every year it has great value to be here, it is not a pro forma. We must be very careful, because anti-Semitism is re-emerging. The memory of April 25th is fundamental for everyone.”
