Ecuador with a national blackout for at least eight hours on Wednesday night and Thursday morning due to “preventive maintenance” on the energy transmission system, as announced by the presidency on Sunday.
It is worth noting that this announcement caused confusion in Venezuela, a country that recently experienced a power outage due to sabotage.
“The electricity service will be suspended nationwide” from 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, local time,” said President Daniel Noboa.
Ecuador with national blackout for preventive maintenance
The works will be carried out at four substations of the national transmission system in the provinces of Morona Santiago, Santa Elena, Guayas and Azuay.
Last April, Ecuador experienced scheduled blackouts of up to 13 hours due to a prolonged drought that drastically reduced the levels of reservoirs used for hydroelectric power generation.
The Mazar dam in Azuay, which supplies the country’s main hydroelectric plant, reached a water level of 0% in mid-month.
Power cuts ended temporarily in May with the return of the rains, but new rationing was imposed in June due to the build-up of sediment in Mazar.
A week ago, a new temporary blackout occurred without prior notice, according to the National Electricity Operator (Cenace), due to a failure in the bar of a substation connected to the Paute generation system.
The electricity sector in Ecuador is in a state of emergency due to low river levels, since 92% of the country’s electricity comes from hydroelectric plants.
