Super Smash Bros. is one of Nintendo’s most iconic licenses since the release of the first episode on Nintendo 64. Allowing the characters of the firm (and others) to compete, it has been declined on each console of the manufacturer.

Super Smash Bros. : a cult license always on top!

Mixing the principles fighting games and mechanics related to platform games, Super Smash Bros. East no and 1999 on Nintendo 64. There are then only 12 fighters, namely Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, Fox, Samus Yoshi, but also Rondoudou, Luigi, Captain Falcon and Ness. The success is immediate, and we find the license on Gamecube with the very, very appreciated Super Smash Bros. Melee.

The latter, with 26 fighters, is still played today, a sign that its qualities span the ages. It will be followed by the Super Smash Bros. episode. Brawl on Wii and Super Smash Bros. episodes. For 3DS / Wii U. The failure of the WiiU drastically reduced its shelf life, and players won’t be scrambling to compete. But in December 2018, nearly two years after the release of the Nintendo Switch, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is coming.

As its name suggests, it brings together a lot of characters, objects, stages and modes from previous opuses, to the point that it is now difficult to imagine how Nintendo will be able to create a new opus without it being relatively disappointing. With 82 fighters, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate serves as a true best-of, and one wonders what the developers have in mind for the sequel, especially after being sold over 31 million copies.

Super Smash Bros. without Masahiro Sakurai? You do not belive it !

The license is still closely linked to its creator, Masahiro Sakurai, which has become legendary and known to all gamers of the title thanks to its character presentations. Very complete, they were also full of humor, to the point of becoming a real meeting. Exhausted by the intensity of development, he stepped back a bit, and took the opportunity to open his own YouTube channel in 2022. He tells reflections and the creative process behind video game development and, if you enjoy these themes, check it out. In a very recent video, dedicated to the development of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Masahiro Sakurai made a statement that joined the thoughts of many fans: hard to imagine Super Smash Bros without him :

The question now is what will happen next? I think of everything that will come after Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. One option would be to separate the series from its original creator, but for now at least I can’t imagine a Smash Bros. title. without me. You might think that’s a natural position for someone in my role, but I’m saying this objectively. (…) Right now we don’t have anyone who can just take the reins. Smash Bros. is a huge and important title for Nintendo, so it’s fair to assume that there will be another at some point, but it’s going to take some work to figure out exactly how to make it happen. For my part, I would like to continue working with Nintendo as much as I can.

For the moment, we don’t know what to expect about the license. We start to have a lot of rumors around the next console, but it’s still far too early to think about games. Nintendo is surely already thinking about it, and it is easy to imagine that Smash Bros is part of many discussions. Nothing says that Masahiro Sakurai will indeed be at the controls of a future game but at present, Nintendo seems to bet on him and the latter intends to respond present. But the day will come when someone else will have to take care of Smash Bros, unless the franchise is too tied to its creator to survive him after his retirement.
