The artist was involved in a major scandal.

Evgeny Leonov became famous for playing mostly positive characters. The artist diligently monitored his filmography and on rare occasions agreed to impersonate dishonest heroes, which secured his reputation as the most honest actor in the country. However, this did not prevent him from being involved in one scandalous case.

So, at the peak of his career, Leonov was an actor at the Don Drama and Comedy Theater, which was located in Novocherkassk. The artist regularly came there for several performances to help the stage fulfill its plan. Many of his colleagues did the same, patronizing small troupes throughout the country.

However, over time, law enforcement agencies began to suspect that Leonov did not actually appear in the productions. His role is played by a completely different artist, and he himself earns money from illegal creative evenings, which at the same time he holds in Novocherkassk. Since such commercial activities were strictly prohibited, he came under the close attention of investigators, and local journalists prepared a number of revealing articles. The press accused Leonov of undermining the economy and wasting public funds.

Leonov might well have ended up in prison, but he was saved by the changing politics in the country. In the second half of the 80s, artists were already allowed to hold such events, so while the police were studying all aspects of the possible crime, Leonov turned out to be innocent.
