Apple caught public attention by confirming that the iPhone will receive a more modern text messaging protocol, RCS, in 2024. However, the company never revealed the precise date on which its users will finally have advanced features to communicate with friends and family members who have an Android device.

On Thursday (28), curious information appeared on the Google Messages presentation page. The messaging app’s website cites, in English, that “Apple announced that it will adopt RCS in the fall of 2024”. It is worth remembering that autumn in the Northern Hemisphere occurs during spring in the Southern Hemisphere, that is, between September and December.

The mentions, initially discovered by 9to5Googlehave been removed from the site, but might mean that Apple will finally implement RCS in its own Messages app from September 2024.

This window might coincide with the launch of iOS 18, the next version of Apple’s mobile operating system, which will reportedly be introduced alongside the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. However, the protocol is expected to be integrated into previous versions of the platform, such as a feature update for iOS 17 and iOS 16.

Currently, when a person exchanges messages with an iOS user through an Android cell phone, several features are unavailable, since the iPhone messaging app only supports SMS and MMS for communication with Android. These protocols do not have modern functions, such as emojis and high-quality images.

This reality should finally change with the adoption of RCS, whose specifications are developed by the GSMA. This protocol is constantly evolving, and will soon support reactions with emojis natively and several other features.

RCS, created in 2007 and recognized by the GSMA since 2008, faced resistance from the Cupertino giant for its integration into the iPhone. As a result, Google chose to employ European Union antitrust regulations to put pressure on Apple, and the results of the efforts may finally reach users soon.
