“It’s essential”, pleads Léa Falco

The European Commission has endorsed the decision to ban sales of new thermal cars to accelerate the transition to all-electric.

No more thermal cars. The 27 member states of the European Union finally approved on Tuesday the Commission’s plan to stop sales of combustion engine cars from 2035, to limit CO2 emissions.

“This is good news”, welcomes this Friday on the set of “Grandes Gueules” Léa Falco. “It’s essential if we want to achieve our climate goals. The car is half of transport emissions in France and 15% of total emissions across the European Union”, recalls the ecologist.

“Paradoxically for builders, it’s also good news. It sets them a course. It commits them not to invest in failed assets, which are not going to be profitable and it gives them the opportunity to position themselves in this sector. -there which is a sector of the future on an international scale”, adds Léa Falco.

Rethink mobility

However, several questions remain to be resolved: what to do with employees in the automotive sector and how will consumers do so that the car does not become a luxury product?

For workers, Lea Falco ensures that they will have to be trained to move them to this sector or another, but leaving them in their employment area. Concerning the car becoming a luxury product, she pleads to rethink mobility:

“We will need low-carbon public transport in the city. In rural areas, we will need easy access to the electric car with leasing or purchase aid as well as an operational electric charging network in France” , she assures.

“Nothing is suitable for this change”

“It’s good but it’s much too early 2035, it’s in 13 years!”, Tempers for his part Xavier, a listener of “Grandes Gueules”. “Nothing is suitable for this change. You first need a charging network and develop fast charging because 30 minutes is not fast charging compared to a full tank which takes 3 minutes”, recalls he.

Another problem he raises is the use of batteries: “An electric car, to be more ecologically advantageous than a petrol car, requires ten years of use. In 10 years of use, the battery must be changed. at least once, and when you see the cost of a battery, it’s very scary”, concluded Xavier.
