Last year, the inflation rate for beer and soju sold in restaurants and other food service establishments was found to be three times the rate of increase in sales at large supermarkets and convenience stores.
According to the National Statistics Portal of the National Statistical Office on the 23rd, the consumer price index for beer sold in restaurants (eating out) last year was 114.66, up 6.9% from the previous year.
This is the highest level in 25 years since 9.7% in 1998 during the IMF foreign exchange crisis.
Compared to the inflation rate of processed food and beer sold at large supermarkets and convenience stores (2.4%), it is 2.9 times higher.
While the price of general processed food beer rose 2.4%, beer for eating out rose three times, or 6.9%.
For soju, the inflation rate for eating out last year was 7.3%, which was 2.8 times higher than the inflation rate for general processed food soju (2.6%).
It was the highest in 7 years since 11.7% in 2016.
Meanwhile, with the tax on domestically produced distilled water being reduced this year, attention is being paid to whether the price of soju at restaurants will also drop.
Hite Jinro lowered the factory prices of Chamisul and Jinro by 10.6% in December last year, and Lotte Chilsung Beverage also lowered the factory prices by 4.5% and 2.7%, respectively.
Accordingly, soju prices at large supermarkets and convenience stores were reduced by up to 10%.
In addition to E-Mart lowering the price of 360ml Chamisul Fresh and Original by 10% from 1,480 won to 1,330 won, Lotte Mart and Homeplus also lowered their prices.
The restaurant industry has not yet seen any significant changes.
The analysis is that this is a result of not raising food prices much amid high inflation, but rather raising the prices of alcoholic beverages to make profits.
