Among the little nuggets available on Star, the new world of Disney+ aimed at a more adult audience, this one may be at the top of the list of series not to be missed! On April 16, the animation studio platform added the first two seasons ofAtlanta, an American fiction launched in 2016. With us, it was broadcast on OCS City for a while before being far too discreet. It is therefore the perfect and perfect opportunity to discover it (or rediscover it) on Disney+. Here are three reasons not to miss it!
1. For casting
It’s one of the great strengths of the series. Atlanta : its casting which gives birth to a gallery of very endearing characters! First of all there is Donald Glover (Community, Alone on Mars), a brilliant artist who is both an actor and a singer, also known by the stage name Childish Gambino. He created the series Atlanta, and who is both one of the screenwriters and one of the producers. In the fiction, the actor embodies Earn, a young broke father, completely upset and lost in his life who has a passion: music. As he reconnects with his rapper cousin, whose stage name is Paper Boy (played by Brian Tyree Henryseen in Joker), he sees in the latter the perfect opportunity to make money and becomes his official manager. Although a small rising star of hip hop, the path will be long for the two men before reaching glory with their fingertips.
To complete the picture, and deceive the two actors, Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out, Selma) plays Darius, Paper Boy’s stoned best friend. While Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2) plays Vanessa, Earn’s girlfriend and perhaps the most reasoned person in the entire series. You would have understood it, Atlanta tells the story of two poor funny guys despite themselves because in total trouble!
2. For the subjects mentioned
Besides the misadventures of Earn and Paper Boy in the various episodes ofAtlanta, the series offers a very current look at America. Very committed to the black community, Donald Glover uses his creation to evoke important subjects such as racism, the American dream, social classes, the music industry… The artist injects a lot of himself into his fiction, starting with the general setting: Atlanta, the city where his parents moved away when he was just a little boy. It is with enormous finesse, realism and melancholy that Donald Glover paints a portrait of an America that was not yet governed by the 45ᵉ President of the United States, Donald Trump. The strength of the series is that it does not look at its protagonists with misery, quite the contrary. And this despite their respective situations. We follow with happiness, emotion and a few bursts of laughter also the adventures of these young heroes who have only one objective: to realize their dreams!
3. Because the series has won many awards
With only two seasons under his belt (for the moment…), Atlanta won numerous distinctions in 2016 and 2017: two Golden Globes, Best Musical or Comedy Series and Best Actor for Donald Glover. But also two Emmy Awards (best actor and best direction), two Critics’ Choice Television Awards, an NAACP Image Awards, two Writers Guild of America Awards… the trophies rewarding fiction prove that it is a work of the small screen not to be missed. Especially since following years of silence, Donald Glover agreed to give two more seasons to its creation. Seasons 3 and 4 ofAtlanta are currently being filmed and should air later this year (in the fall for season 3 and in 2022 for season 4… if all goes according to plan).
