Shelly Battista was afflicted with a breast cancer diagnosis in 2020, when she was 34 years old.
“It’s a real miracle. We have two babies, exactly two years following I got rid of cancer. I feel complete,” she says.
As part of her treatment, she had to undergo chemotherapy and decided to freeze eight embryos, as she wanted more children in the future, as she was already the mother of a first child.
In fact, the American Cancer Society recommends freezing eggs before starting cancer treatment.
Battista also had to undergo a double mastectomy at the end of 2020, then declared cured of cancer.
As if that wasn’t enough, she also learned that she was at high risk of developing ovarian cancer, following which she made the decision to have them removed.
It’s a year following she decided to have another child.
“Even without ovaries, we are able to provide the extra hormones needed for pregnancy. This alone is an important point, because many people are surprised to learn that you can use in vitro fertilization to get pregnant even if the ovaries have been surgically removed or no longer work,” said Dr. Kara Goldman, Medical Director from the Department of Fertility at the Northwestern Medicine Center for Fertilization and Reproductive Medicine.
Shelly’s wish to have a baby once more finally came true on the very anniversary of her cancer recovery.
