‘It’s a huge increase’: Tires will cost you more this year, here’s why

In the current economic context, we are going to have to pay more for our tires this winter. A price increase of 15 to 20% compared to last winter.

Despite the very spring-like weather this week, you will soon have to think regarding putting winter tires on your car. Problem? The price is increasing dramatically. It is estimated that tires will be 15 to 20% more expensive this winter. “We were around 85 euros and today we are around 100 euros”, notes Fabrice Bruandet, Marketing Director at QTeam. This for a tire, an amount that must be multiplied by four. You will therefore have to pay 80 euros more this year to change your four tires. “It’s a huge increase, people weren’t ready for such an increase. Neither were we.”points to Didier Codron from Monsieur Pneu.

in cause? “Manufacturers have had to pass on the cost of the general crisis. Raw materials are more expensive, some factories have had to close completely. We have supply difficulties this year”, continues Didier Codron. Oil, for example, has risen sharply. A material that makes up more than 80% of a tire. The price of energy as well. And finally, there was also the container crisis with prices which exploded during the Covid. Sea freight was blocked between China and the United States.

With the war in Ukraine, we expect a further rise of 6 to 7% in the coming weeks. Added to this is the indexation of wages next January.
