Due to the narrowness of the road and the many trucks that use it, the Vereeckenstraat has been proclaimed by its inhabitants “the most dangerous street in Aalst”. To avoid accidents, the municipality of Gijzegem has taken a very special measure.

To secure the Vereeckenstraat, after the death of a person last year, the municipality of Gijzegem took various measures, including a rather special one. She decided to paint the whole intersection red.

“It’s a first draft,” said Alderman for Mobility and Public Works, Jean-Jacques De Gucht (Open VLD). While some residents have reservations about this decision, the alderman indicates that additional measures will be confirmed.

This street, described as “the most dangerous street in Aalst”, indeed sees a lot of trucks crossing each other. Due to the narrowness of the road, the latter constantly drive on the sidewalk, endangering pedestrians and cyclists, not to mention speeding, which is also a problem.
