The US state of Monstana is taking an important step to ban the Chinese social platform TikTok, after lawmakers passed a law to that effect. To enter into force, it only needs the signature of the governor, who is in favor of the ban.

With 54 to 43 votes, Montana state lawmakers voted to ban TikTok, a ban that is expected to come into force at the beginning of next year, writes news.ro.

Specifically, the new law prohibits TikTok from operating within the state, and app stores are no longer allowed to offer access to it for download by Montanans.

However, the law does not prohibit those who already have TikTok from using it, notes the BBC.

Like previous federal measures, the Montana law says Americans’ personal data is at risk of being intercepted by the Chinese Communist government because of the close ties between TikTok and ByteDance.

TikTok, of course, has always denied these accusations and recently announced a project worth over a billion dollars, through which it promises to better protect the personal data of American citizens.

Carl Szabo, vice president and general counsel of NetChoice, an industry group that includes TikTok, said the bill “sets a dangerous precedent that the government can try to ban any business it doesn’t like without clear evidence.” that he committed a crime,” according to CBS, quoted by the BBC.

To officially take effect, the new law must be signed by the state’s governor, Republican Greg Gianforte. This would be just a formality, Gianforte banning TikTok on the phones of state employees since December.

Montana could be the first US state to ban TikTok, with other states following suit before such a decision is made at the federal level.
