“It’s a Belgian joke”: first controversy at the trial of the Brussels attacks

After the trial of the attacks of November 13, 2015, which ended on June 29 in Paris, it is now time for the trial of the Brussels attacks which had been committed on March 22, 2016 at the airport and in a metro line in the capital. Belgian.

That day, three terrorists blew themselves up: two at the airport (Ibrahim El Bakraoui and Najim Laachraoui) and one in the metro (Khalid El Bakraoui), leaving 340 injured and 32 dead.

In Brussels, from this Monday, September 12, 2022, ten accused are on trial. Among them, six were among those who were convicted in the November 13 trial: Salah Abdeslam, Mohamed Abrini, Sofien Ayari, Osama Krayem and Ali El Haddad Asufi. The sixth, Osama Atar, suspected of being the organizer of the Belgian and Parisian attacks, is also accused in the two trials. But he is on trial in his absence, having probably died in Syria in November 2017.

This Monday, it was only a preliminary hearing. The goal? Establish the list of people who will testify at the hearing and their order of appearance. The conditions of supervision of the accused were discussed.

The trial will resume on Monday, October 10 with a jury hearing.
