The announcement took everyone by surprise. This Monday in Rome, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Albanian counterpart, Edi Rama, signed a memorandum of understanding authorizing Italy to build two centers for applicants in this small Balkan state. Objective: to process asylum requests from 36,000 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean by the Italian navy or coast guard each year. In return, the head of the Italian government pledged to do everything so that Albania can join the European Union (EU).
