Rome – Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed on Sunday that his country is ready to send forces with a United Nations mission with the aim of supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state.
He added in an interview with the Italian newspaper “Avenir” that tension in the region still exists, and that Italy is working to reach a ceasefire in both Lebanon and Gaza.
He explained that Italy is in constant contact with its embassies in Tel Aviv, Beirut, and Tehran, and is monitoring the situation closely, stressing its readiness to evacuate its citizens from the region.
Tajani pointed out “the challenges facing achieving peace in Palestine, especially in light of the presence of two different governments in Gaza and the West Bank.”
He continued: “Our goal is to facilitate this unification (unifying Gaza and the West Bank under one administration) through a United Nations mission that may exist for a limited period, under Arab leadership and under the supervision of the Palestinian leadership.”
He stressed that his country is ready to send forces with a United Nations mission with the aim of “supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state that recognizes and is recognized by Israel.”
He stressed that recognizing the State of Palestine must be a serious option for Israel to achieve lasting peace.
Recently, Spain, Norway and Ireland announced their recognition of the State of Palestine, following the devastating Israeli war on the Gaza Strip since last October, and the escalation of Israeli restrictions on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
