Italy: Uproar with the Pope’s disparaging statements about gays – 2024-07-02 15:33:55

During meeting behind closed doors with bishops in Rome last week, Fr Pope Francis he is said to have spoken disparagingly of them homosexualsusing “offensive epithets” and slurs.

The bishops and the pontiff were reportedly debating whether gay men should be admitted to Catholic seminaries, where priests are trained,

When one of the bishops asked Francis what he should do, the pope reportedly reiterated his objection to accepting gay mensaying that – while it is important to “embrace them all”, it is possible that a homosexual could risk leading a double life.

He then reportedly added that there are already too many “frociaggine”, a vulgar Italian word which roughly (and politely) translates to “crazy gays”.

The leaks were widely reported in the Italian press – in major newspapers such as La Repubblica and Corriere but also in the news agency Adnkronos.

Many bishops who attended the meeting – which took place last November – said they were surprised and confused by the word used by the pontiff, who probably meant the derogatory term as a “joke”. In fact, one bishop told Corriere della Sera that Francis may not have known the term was offensive.

There was no comment from the Vatican on the reports.
